Technologies for Forecasting Volcanic Hazards

course2023The course in Technologies for Forecasting Volcanic Hazards is offered as part of the Master Degree in Automation Engineering and Control of Complex Systems of the University of Catania.

This course is intended to help the students gain a better understanding and appreciation of volcanic hazards and perception of risk. Using Mt Etna as a case study will allow the students to apply this knowledge to people living near potentially dangerous volcanoes.

The course introduces both traditional volcano monitoring and new technological innovation from satellite remote sensing for developing a better understanding of volcanic hazards. The collection of models and methods will include advanced satellite techniques for ash plumes and lava flows detection and characterization, coupled with geophysical flow models to forecast eruptive scenarios and assess volcanic hazards.

Collaboration and stage opportunities

We are interested on collaborations on these topics:

1. Space technologies for volcanic monitoring,
2. Hybrid modeling of hazardous volcanic phenomena, and
3. Catastrophic volcanic eruptions and climate change interactions.

 Former PhD Students

The idea is to bring together the experience of volcanologists with the knowledge of engineers. The aim of the TechnoLab is to become the scientific and technical training center for young researchers in volcano monitoring.

Since the foundation of the TechnoLab, over 50 degree theses in different topics have been completed, as well as 10 PhDs in Engineering have been activated on the development of methodologies for forecasting volcanic hazards.
