Research summary
Simona Cariello obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering and her Master’s degree in Automation Engineering and Control of Complex Systems from the University of Catania. In 2022, she began her PhD at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which she successfully completed on December, 2025, earning a PhD in Systems, Energy, Computer Science, and Telecommunications Engineering. During her doctoral studies, she attended several international conferences and advanced schools focused on Earth Observation and AI. Her research focuses on the development and application of advanced artificial intelligence methodologies, including deep learning and foundation models, to satellite remote sensing data for volcanic hazard monitoring. Since 2022, she has been a member of the Technolab research group at INGV – Etna Volcano Observatory in Catania.
