Case Studies
Natural Laboratories for Earth-System Research
VT-CLAIM validates global findings through regional case studies where climate, volcanism and tectonics interact most strongly.

These complementary natural laboratories capture key climatic, volcanic, and tectonic processes across diverse environments and spatial scales, offering a unique opportunity to investigate Earth-system interactions and their societal impacts.
In-Situ Experiments
Observing Earth-System Processes in the Field
Satellite observations are complemented by dedicated field campaigns designed to provide high-resolution measurements and independent validation of AI-derived results.
Mediterranean Experiments
Deployment of mobile multiparametric stations to measure:
- Volcanic gas emissions
- Atmospheric composition
- Ground deformation
- Oceanic carbon uptake
- Ash transport and deposition
Iceland Experiments
Field observations focus on:
- Volcanic and tectonic gas emissions
- Meteorological conditions
- Glacier-related processes
- Magmatic and seismic activity
Polar Experiments
Innovative airborne and ground-based platforms support measurements of:
- Atmospheric composition
- Aerosols and clouds
- Thermal anomalies
- Cryosphere dynamics
Integrated Validation
These observations provide the ground truth needed to validate satellite products, improve AI models and test the physical plausibility of detected Earth-system interactions.

ClimGas Portal
The ClimGas platform employs machine learning algorithms, to automatically identify volcanic SO2 plumes and estimate their mass from Sentinel-5P TROPOMI data. The platform provides global coverage from 2018 to the present and enables on-demand retrieval of SO2 mass estimates and associated time series through an intuitive web-based interface, with cloud-based processing via Google Earth Engine. The main idea started within the Pianeta Dinamico SAFARI project and the platform was developed in the VT-CLAIM framework, with the support of Epos VOLC-TCS.
